April is National Humor Month

With a busy schedule and laundry list of daily responsibilities, it can be easy to fall into a funk or become easily stressed out. Stress and anxiety can lead to more serious health disorders in addition to weakening your immune system.

April has been designated National Humor Month; a reminder to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to enjoy a few laughs. The overall goal of the observance is to generate awareness for the various health benefits that regular laughter provides. Taking a moment out of your day to enjoy some comic relief offers several short-term and long-term benefits. Here are just some of the many ways laughter can improve your overall health:

  • Stress Relief: One of the best relievers of stress is a good laugh. When you are so overwhelmed at work or home that you are unable to get anything done, it is best to take a step back for a few chuckles. A reduction in stress can also lead to lower blood pressure and help those with irregular heartbeats. Watch a short video of your favorite comedian, movie, or TV show to help reduce your stress level.
  • Pain Relief: Laughter not only helps reduce one’s stress, but can also provide the same benefit with regards to pain relief. Laugher is especially helpful for rehabilitation patients recovering from a major injury.
  • Mood Improvement: If you’ve been “down in the dumps” or in a funk for an extended period of time, humor can be an effective mood booster. Laughter has also been known to be a remedy for those with more serious forms of depression or anxiety.
  • Immune System: Just like stress can worsen your immune system, making you more prone to illness, a good laugh can substantially strengthen your immune system. Even if you are completely healthy with no major illnesses or complications, improving your immune system wherever possible is always a wise decision.
